Favourite harmonicas
I mainly use Hohner Big River MS harps that I modify and tune myself. I like the MS (Modular System) concept that allows one to easily replace parts of the harmonica or switch parts between different types of MS harmonicas. Previously, I used Hohner Special 20 (MS), but since Hohner stopped producing them, I switched to Big River. I think they sound like the classic Marine Band, which I believe is due to the similar design of the cover plates.
I bought a couple of Big River cover plates separately and put them on my set of Special 20 (MS) harps. They have the same kind of plastic comb and similar reed plates. In this way, I now have a complete set of Big Rivers ranging from low F# (F#3) to high F (F4). I also have a low E (E3) and F (F3), but the latter is a Lee Oskar.
Nowadays, I only replace the reed plates on my harps. This is only needed occasionally, when a reed gets so bad (due to metal fatigue) that it can't be retuned. (I have not yet tried to replace a bad reed.) I mainly use ordinary MS brass reed plates (0.9 mm thick) that I buy without screws and boxes (from Didi Neumann) for about 10 Euro per pair (blow and draw plates).
